The Iowa Department of Health and Human Services is suing NuCara Pharmacy in Pleasant Hill and its parent company, Nudak Ventures, for nearly $22 million related to a federal program for HIV medications. HHS bought the drugs at discounted prices while NuCara billed insurers at the standard rate. NuCara was allowed to keep a $75 processing fee, but the rest of the money was supposed to go back to HHS. In court documents, the state claims NuCara failed to repay about $22 million and may not have the funds to cover it. The suit also alleges NuCara is being sold and the buyer does not plan to take on that debt.
