WINFIELD — The current president of the Winfield Historical Society and Museum Judy Rawson will step down next month. In light of this change she offers the following sentiments.

Judy Rawson spoke about her memories with her father growing up and shared some of his personally story during his career during one of many educational programs she lead during her time as president of the Winfield Historical Society and Museum. (Hunter Moeller/The Union)

Passing the gavel in 2024

In 1997 I had the bright idea to start a historical society. I put an ad in the paper for interested people to meet at the library and a handful showed up. It was a good group that passed the word and the following month about 50 came.

In 1998 we incorporated forming the Winfield Historical Society. By 1999 we rented our current location and the museum grew from there. I’m happy to say with the community support our history is being preserved and we’re stronger than ever.

I took each Day One at a time never imagining I’d still be doing it 26 years later.

Time for a break!

I have especially enjoyed creating displays, programs and seeing people come in to visit and look around. Thanks to an active board, those things should continue. I believe strongly in our mission and with them continual success.

The new President as of Aug. 1 will be Linda Haight, please give her your support. I know she has a love of our history, too.

I’m excited about the north Building progress with hopes of the museum moving there. I am happy to be a consultant on that project as needed and have a lot of ideas on ways to

move forward in the future.

As General McArthur once said, “We are not retreating, we are advancing in another direction.”
