Sen. Lauren Vierregger, a junior studying agronomy and horticulture, is the only candidate running for the sole Frederiksen Court seat in the Iowa State Student Government Senate.
Vierregger is currently the Frederiksen Court senator. In 2024, 354 students from the on-campus apartment complex voted in the Student Government election.
Student Government is a student organization that exists to serve and represent all students, according to the student organization database. They annually distribute $2.6 million in student fee revenue to organizations on campus and in Story County.
Senate elections will take place Tuesday and Wednesday, and ballots will be emailed to students’ Iowa State email addresses.
The following interview with Vierregger was conducted by email.
What are your qualifications for being a Senator?
“This is my second term as a senator here on campus, where in my previous term I sat as a Residence Hall Senator and currently am sitting as the Frederiksen Court Senator. This is also my second term as a member of the Student Government Sustainability Committee.”
What are the most significant issues facing your constituents, and how will you address them?
“From my own experiences and listening to residents at Frederiksen Court, I believe that the most significant issue that is currently facing my constituents is the lack of connection to central campus and representation within Student Government. Due to being on the edge of campus and the lack of knowledge surrounding Freddy Court, many people either do not know we exist or that we are a prevalent community here at Iowa State University. We have made a lot of progress this year on that issue, especially the Freddy Court Community Council working to get more participation within the council, connecting to the Inter-Residence Hall Association and hosting more events with a large amount of resident engagement. There is more still to be done such as a continued publicity of not only Frederiksen Court events and opportunities, but also Frederiksen Court issues, with many residents voicing they have ideas on how to better the community but not knowing how. “
Why should students vote for you?
“I believe that students should vote for me because I want to accurately represent my constituents and give them a better voice as previously mentioned. I also have a plethora of ideas I would like to accomplish this upcoming year mainly through the sustainability committee, such as increasing the education around native plants and ecosystems found on campus and in Iowa, as well as the development of a pollinator garden somewhere on campus.”
Why do you want to return to Student Government, and what are you most proud of during your time in Student Government?
“I would have to say that the proudest moment that I have had while being a senator this year in Student Government, was being able to be part of the change we saw this year in our organization. As one of the senators that was part of the 2023-2024 term, I believe everyone has collectively made this organization better, from higher amounts of Student Government events being hosted, to a high amount of seats filled and a plethora of projects being created. The change is astounding between the two terms and I think everyone who was part of it, new and old, should be proud they got to help, even if it was just a little.”
