James Gunn recently revealed what directors he would like to work with on potential future DCU movies, and one of them is no stranger to the world of the MCU.

Who are James Gunn’s dream DCU directors?

Speaking with Josh Horowitz during a recent appearance on the Happy Sad Confused Podcast, Gunn was asked if there were any directors he’d like to bring into the DCU fold. Gunn called out Black Panther and Sinners director Ryan Coogler as one, and also named Matt Reeves and Greta Gerwig as another pair, for very good reason.

“I love the people that are out there making pop movies that are still…they’re making big movies that still have themselves in it,” Gunn said. “So I really love people that are taking risks in the area of spectacle film, because most of the stuff out there is not a risk.”

Gunn went on to lament the state of “big popcorn movies,” saying that it can often be “boring” when movies feel like they’re all too similar to one another. “I love disposable stuff, but let’s make it good disposable. I love big popcorn movies, but it just gets to be boring when they’re all the same.”

Coincidentally, this isn’t the first time Gunn has mentioned Coogler in passing. The director mentioned that he had recently spoken with Coogler to reflect on the Black Panther premiere and the excitement over the film.

Following 2025’s Superman, up next for Gunn’s DC Universe in the world of film is Supergirl, which releases on June 26, 2026, and Clayface, which has a release date tentatively set for September 11, 2026.
