The Iowa State tennis team beat Iowa 4-3 on Wednesday. The Cyclones, now 3-1, have won in Iowa City twice in three years.
The Cyclones’ victory also clinched the Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series. With a lead of 13-8 and just gymnastics and softball to be played, Iowa can only gain a maximum of four points if it wins both of the remaining events.
Iowa started the contest by winning its doubles match on the No. 3 court, but Iowa State would bounce back. On the No. 2 court, freshmen Julia Camblor and Gabriela Felix defeated the Hawkeye pairing of Barbora Pokorna and Tereza Dejnozkova 6-4.
Senior Anna Supapitch Kuearum and freshman Cristina Ramos Sierra won the No. 1 court and the doubles point 6-4, downing Iowa’s Daianne Hayashida and Nikita Vishwase.
After going up 1-0, the Cyclones would find themselves down 2-1 after Pokorna and No. 76 Dejnozkova won their respective singles matches.
At the No. 1 court, the nation’s No. 70 ranked singles player Kuearum righted the ship for Iowa State after her 3-6, 6-4, 6-0 victory over No. 113 Hayashida. Kuearum finished her career with three wins in four years over the Hawkeyes.
Freshman Suzanie Pretorius notched another singles point for the Cyclones on the No. 4 court. Pretorius defeated Vishwase 7-5, 7-5.
Iowa evened the match score with its victory on the No. 6 court. With the meet tied at three apiece, it all centered on the No. 3 court.
Ramos Sierra went back and forth with Hawkeye Marisa Schmidt. Their match went into a tie-breaker with the third set tied six games each. In the end, Ramos Sierra prevailed closing the night on a thrilling back-and-forth meet.
The rivalry win over Iowa showcased the turnaround from last year’s rebuild. With one senior, one sophomore and four freshmen, Iowa State went east and beat a Hawkeye team that had two nationally ranked singles players. This team has made leaps and bounds from last year’s rebuild and will be fun to watch the entire season.
Next, Iowa State hosts Wyoming at 2 p.m. Saturday from the Iowa State Tennis Facility.
