Students and their families had the opportunity to explore Iowa State and the activities happening at Cyclone Family Weekend.

The event was held Sept. 13 through Sept. 15, filling the weekend with activities families could partake in.

Blake Helms, a freshman in mechanical engineering, expressed his excitement to show his family where he spends his time while at Iowa State.

“Just to show my family the campus and where I have my classes,” Helms said. “Also, of course, show them the football field and Parks Library [and] show them where I like to go studying… I have to show them this next chapter of my life,” he said.

Zac Ritter, a freshman in civil engineering, said he was most excited to show his family the College of Engineering.

“It’s prestigious, it’s very good and a lot of the students there in the buildings are awesome,” Ritter said.

Ritter said it was fun to show his family the balance of social life and school life.

Rachel Gross, a freshman studying animal science, said she just enjoyed spending time with her family again.

“We’re going out to eat, and they’re getting me groceries,” Gross said.

She was most excited to show her family her sorority because it houses the people she is with most.

Curt Gross, a parent of Rachel Gross, said he was excited to see it as well.

“[Just] to see the environment she lives in and the friends she’s making, just the whole gamut of what her life is going to be like here,” Curt Gross said.

Micah McLean, a freshman in architecture, said that the College of Engineering was his favorite to attend.

“They had their [Society of Automotive Engineers] teams there where they showcase the vehicles and cars that they work on and it was interesting seeing the work that they had,” McLean said.

McLean also said he was interested in the rock climbing wall and also wanted to check out the Cyclone Cinema later in the evening.

“I wanna try doing the rock wall climbing at State Gym and I wanna try getting to Cyclone Cinema tonight,” McLean said.

Steve Honcharuk, a freshman studying environmental science, gave an overview of his weekend activities.

“We went to Reiman Gardens, that was super cool,” Honcharuk said. “We took up a bunch of time there. Then we just jotted over [to the Jack Trice Stadium Tour].”

Kary Law, a family member of Honcharuk, was a graduate of Iowa State in 1995.

“It’s important to get to see what goes on here now,” Law said. “Whatever I experienced years ago is totally different now The school has a lot to offer, and for his major, there are so many cool opportunities.”
