AMES – The Iowa State tennis team won 5-2 against Wyoming at home Saturday. The Cyclones, now 4-1, have a two-game win streak after their big win over in-state rival Iowa.
Despite the Cowgirls coming into Ames with a 1-6 record, Iowa State needed to remain focused and not lose their edge.
“[Wyoming is] well coached, they’re a disciplined team and they’re not afraid of a hard schedule,” Iowa State head coach Jaron Maestas said. “It was good to see us respond coming off an Iowa win and protect our home. It’s exactly what we need to continue our season.”
The doubles part of the match saw Iowa State reign supreme. Senior Anna Supapitch Kuearum and freshman Cristina Ramos Sierra beat Wyoming’s Violetta Borodina and Eugenia Ceinos 6-2 for the No. 1 court win.
The Cyclones’ pairing of freshmen Gabriela Felix and Mari Paz Alberto Vilar overtook the Cowgirls’ Ana Kochelaevskaia and Elena Trencheva 6-4, taking the No. 2 court and the doubles point.
Freshman Julia Camblor got Iowa State its first singles win after beating Wyoming’s Ceinos 6-4, 6-0 on the No. 2 court.
The Cyclones kept on rolling with two more wins. No. 70-ranked Kuearum won 6-2, 6-3 over Borodina on the No. 1 court. Ramos Sierra took the No. 3 spot by beating Cowgirl Ruby Young 6-4, 6-4.
Wyoming responded with a win on the No. 5 court, but it would be too little too late. On the No. 4 court, Alberto Vilar clinched the Iowa State victory after defeating Kochelaevskaia 7-6, 6-1.
It was a strong showing for the Cyclones, who further grew their confidence after defeating Iowa.
“I think everyone believes in themselves that we can do it and fight for each other. And I feel like we have more confidence to go all the way through,” Kuearum said.
Next, Iowa State will face Illinois on the road at 4 p.m. Friday.
