Former Arkansas State junior quarterback Jaylen Raynor announced his commitment to Iowa State for his final season of college eligibility Saturday night.
Raynor started 36 games for the Red Wolves and in those games had 9,877 yards of total offense and 67 touchdowns.
Raynor will rejoin Keith Heckendorf, who was his offensive coordinator at Arkansas State. Heckendorf will be the quarterback’s coach at Iowa State under new head coach Jimmy Rogers.
Raynor and Heckendorf gave Iowa State an early-season scare when the Cyclones traveled to Arkansas State. The at-the-time undefeated No. 14 Cyclones escaped with a 24-16 victory for their fourth consecutive victory to start the season.
In that matchup, Raynor threw for 222 yards, a 58% completion percentage, a 108 passer rating and an interception. Raynor was also the rushing leader for the Red Wolves while running for 81 yards.
Raynor is expected to compete for the starting role and will provide a veteran presence as Iowa State prepares for the inaugural season under Rogers.
“The coaching staff is known for winning,” Raynor said to ESPN sports reporter Pete Thamel. “The head coach is a known winner and done it on multiple levels. It’s a great opportunity, and everyone is super-excited about the opportunity.”
