Iowa State lost 1-0 to No. 11 Iowa on Thursday night in Iowa City. The loss drops the Cyclones’ record to 1-1-2 on the season. The Hawkeyes notched the first win of the Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series with their victory.
The first half of the game, while scoreless, was dominated by Iowa’s repeated attacks on goal. The Hawkeyes had 10 shots in the first half, compared to just two by the Cyclones.
Iowa played a more physical game in the first half than Iowa State, racking up seven fouls and an eventual yellow card in the 36th minute by midfielder Abby Skiff.
Iowa refused to take its foot off the gas and brought the same energy and intensity it had in the first half into the second. Eventually, in the 49th minute, the first goal of the match was scored by Skiff, putting Iowa up one. The goal was assisted by midfielder/forward Liana Tarasco.
The Hawkeyes kept trying to up the ante, adding another 17 shots in the second half, but they were unable to find the back of the net. It was more of the same story for Iowa State, unable to mount any offensive attacks. They were hurried and harassed just like the first, and were only able to get two shots in the second half.
In the 58th minute, Iowa was given its second yellow card, this time to Tarasco. The Cyclones also received their only yellow card of the match in the 65th minute, to junior midfielder/forward Lucy Froitzheim.
This game was dominated by Iowa from start to finish. They led in shots with 27, 10 shots on goal and corners with seven. However, Iowa State redshirt sophomore Kasey Cannistraro had nine saves in the game, preventing several Iowa goals and keeping the game close.
Next, Iowa State will face North Dakota at 1 p.m. Sunday at the Cyclone Sports Complex.
