AMES – Iowa State tennis bested South Dakota 7-0 at home Sunday. The Cyclones improved to 5-2 and have won three out of their last four matches.
The victory was also the first for newly ranked Iowa State. As of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s Feb. 20 team rankings, the Cyclones are No. 46 in the country.
Iowa State’s No. 2 doubles pairing of freshmen Mari Paz Alberto Vilar and Julia Camblor won the first doubles match 6-2 over South Dakota’s Bea Havlickova and Grace Chadick.
Sophomore Valeska San Martin Ramirez and freshman Suzanie Pretorius beat the Coyotes’ Selena Bird and Anna Medvyedyeva 6-3 to give the Cyclones the doubles point.
The Cyclones are now 5-0 when they win in doubles.
Going into singles, Iowa State kept its foot on the gas. On the first court, No. 81 ranked senior Anna Supapitch Kuearum gave the Cyclones their first singles win 6-0, 6-2 over Havlickova.
On the No. 2 court, Camblor handled business, beating South Dakota’s Amanda de Oliveira 6-2, 6-1. On the sixth court, Ramirez clinched the dual meet for the Cyclones. Winning 7-6, 6-1 against Katarina Curcic.
Singles matches were played out after the dual result. Iowa State’s No. 3 singles player Vilar, dispatched the Coyotes’ Sorcha Caves 6-3, 6-3.
Pretorius bested South Dakota’s Bird on the No. 4 court 6-2, 4-6, 1-0. Cyclone freshman Gabriela Felix won 6-3, 7-6 on the No. 5 court against Chadick to close out the dual match.
Next up, the Cyclones will take on Colorado State at 6 p.m. Wednesday in Fort Collins, Colorado.
