AMES – Iowa State hosted the Iowa State Classic on Saturday. The Cyclones faced tough competition from all over the Midwest and the state of Iowa.

Women’s mile places four in the top five

The women’s mile run was one of the Cyclones’ most impressive events. The event saw Iowa State sweep the podium and had another runner take fifth overall.

Sophomore Mya Trober took home first place with a blistering time of 4:44.63. Behind her in second was junior Ashlyn Keeney (4:45.25) followed by sophomore Sheridan Wheeler (4:46.06) who placed third and in fifth was sophomore Sydney Morrell (4:47.56).

Cyclones shine in 800-meter dash

The Cyclone men and women had very impressive performances in the 800-meter dash. 

On the men’s side, Iowa State took first and second place. Senior Darius Kipyego placed first with a time of 1:46.56. Kipyego was followed by fellow senior Dugion Blackman, who came in second with a time of 1:47.54.

On the women’s side, junior Kaia Holtkamp placed second with a time of 2:09.88. Behind her, placing fourth, was sophomore Camryn Hubbard, with a time of 2:10.24.

60-meter hurdles are a strong point

Not to be outdone in any other event, the Cyclones showed up in a big way in both the men’s and women’s 60-meter hurdles. 

On the women’s side, Iowa State took second and third place. Freshman Riyah Burns took home second place with a time of 8.53 seconds. Followed closely behind was senior Kiersten Fisher placing third with a time of 8.58 seconds.

For the men, sophomore Jack Latham took home first place with a time of 7.81 seconds. Junior Alec Carr placed second with a time of 7.90 seconds. 

The Cyclones will look to build off of the momentum from Saturday into their next meet. Iowa State is back in action next Friday and Saturday at the Tyson Invite in Fayetteville, Arkansas.
