Hey Cyclones,
There’s something special in Ames — particularly in August. As students move back into their dorms, streets become full again and campus buzzes with a mixture of returning students and fresh faces, there is certainly an energy you simply cannot find anywhere else.
For me, Iowa State is home. More than 30,000 students call this place their own, but each of us has a different journey and perspective at Iowa State. It is part of the magic — sharing the same campus, but all telling our own story.
Every fall, we have the opportunity to shape the stories that may not be told — from someone entering a leadership role to the formation of a new club on campus. For many students, that someone may be them. I encourage students to take a leap, try new things and get out of their comfort zone — because that is where we grow as people and into ourselves. That is where I grew into myself and explored my strengths. Being challenged is not a bad thing, but rather an opportunity to discover ourselves and find the strength within ourselves that many do not know they have.
Leaving your mark is part of the adventure, and finding ways to give back to the community is what makes Iowa State special. For some, that may be helping your lab partner if they are struggling, or talking with a roommate or friend who is struggling with mental health. The point being, we are all here at the same time, experiencing Iowa State from 30,000 perspectives. This is our opportunity to contribute something that will last long after graduation.
At the Iowa State Daily, we believe telling the stories of our community is one of the most meaningful ways to contribute. This year, our team hopes to bring a fresh perspective to reporting and find ways to engage with issues that shape student life. We are exploring new ways to reach more people, connect with our community and amplify voices that too often go unheard.
However, we cannot do it without you. If there is a story or issue that you feel is important, let us know. Our newsroom serves you — the community.
Your time at Iowa State is destined to move quickly, so make the most of it. Be curious, push yourself, make the most out of the opportunities that come your way, but most importantly, be you.
Here’s to another year of growth and reflection,
Sincerely,
Brayton Kohl
