The Cyclones set two different school records in the 2025-26 season as they split up for the final time.

Distance medley relay record

At the Arkansas Qualifier, the Cyclones competed in the distance medley relay, with both the men’s and women’s teams showing success.

In the women’s distance medley relay, they ended up with a 10:44.11 final time, shaving 10 seconds off the previous fastest women’s distance medley relay in Iowa State history.

This time is also the sixth-fastest in collegiate history and the fourth-fastest this year. The top 12 times after the conference championships will advance to the NCAA Championships, so this time puts the Cyclones in a good spot to advance.

The relay consisted of Makayla Clark running the 1,200-meter leg, handing it off to Rachel Joseph for the 400-meter leg, to Emma Vorpagel for the 800-meter leg and then handing it off to Betty Kipkore for the final 1,600-meter part of the relay.

The men’s team also did well, with a time of 9:26:13, which ranks fourth in Iowa State history.

The distance medley relay (DMR) is an event in which four athletes combine for 4000 meters, splitting unequal shares to challenge a variety of runners.

The four runners each run a different distance: the first leg is 1200 meters, the second is 400 meters, the third is 800 meters and the fourth and final leg is 1600 meters. This event allows for longer-distance runners and some shorter-distance sprinters to compete in relay races.

Eight top 10 Iowa State performances

In addition to the two DMR performances, the Cyclones had six other top-10 performances in Iowa State history.

The highlight of these came from the Iowa open, where Daylin Williams, in the men’s 60-meter hurdles, set a time of 7.72, which broke his own Iowa State record that he set one week ago at the Tyson Invite.

Jenna James was the only other Cyclone at the Arkansas Qualifier to set a top 10 performance, running the women’s 400-meter dash and getting a time of 52.71, which marks the second-best women’s 400-meter dash performance in Iowa State history.

The four other top 10 performances came from the Iowa Open, where, in the men’s weight throw, Lucas Morrison set a personal record, as well as the eight best Iowa State performances, with a 20.07-meter throw.

In the 60-meter hurdles, there were two top 10 performances, with Emma Havighurst setting her own personal record, getting a time of 8.31, which marks the sixth-best performance in Iowa State history for the women’s 60-meter hurdles.

Riyah Burns was the other Cyclone in the women’s 60-meter hurdles, setting the seventh-best time in school history with a personal record of 8.36.

In the men’s 60-meter hurdles, Alec Carr set a personal record of 7.77, the third-best time in Iowa State history.

Nine personal records

Four other Cyclones set personal records over the weekend. In the men’s weight throw, Brandon Fischer set a personal record with a throw of 19.16 meters.

In the 60-meter hurdles, Maia Denge-Hagen secured an 8.63 for a new personal best.

In the women’s mile run, Josie Baker and Olivia Verde both got personal records, both with a time of 4:55.07. Denge-Hagen also set another personal record in the 200-meter dash with a time of 25.27.

The Cyclones will compete at the Big 12 Championships on Friday and Saturday as the indoor season comes to a close.
