As the cross country season ended two weeks ago, Iowa State runners have started the indoor track season, and kicked it off this weekend at the Sharon Colyear-Danville Invite in Boston.
Junior Maelle Porcher brought the momentum in from her success this fall, starting the indoor track season with a personal-record in the women’s 3,000 meter run, with a time of 9:01.17. Her time goes into the history books as Iowa State’s third fastest 3,000 meter runner. That time placed her as the 11th fastest collegiate athlete in the event and 16th overall.
Following the women, men’s runners, including seniors Devan Kipyego and Silas Winders posted speedy times in the 3,000 meter run. Kipyego ran a 7:49.62, posting the fourth fastest time in Iowa State history.
Winders came in right behind Kipyego, in 7:49.81, less than 0.2 seconds behind. Kipyego and Winders placed seventh and eighth in the 3,000 meter run respectively.
In a loaded 5,000 meter run, seniors Sanele Masondo and Said Mechaal went to work, Masondo posting a 13:20.30. His personal-record that he held previously was Iowa State’s fifth fastest in school history. Masondo’s new one sits at second.
Mechaal finished less than a second afterwards, running a 13:21.13, which sits as Iowa State’s third fastest time in school history. In addition to the record breaks of Masondo and Mechaal, freshman Joash Ruto ran a 13:40.73, Iowa State’s eighth fastest time in the event.
Looking ahead, Iowa State’s next three indoor meets are all at home, including next weekend’s ISU Holiday Invite from Dec. 13th – 14th at Lied Recreation Center. Having completed one meet already this indoor season, the Cyclones will look to improve upon these times posted this weekend.
