ABC has finally granted renewals to five of its most popular shows at the moment, including its newest sitcom Shifting Gears starring Tim Allen and Kat Dennings. These newly-renewed shows will be a part of the network’s 2025-2026 broadcast season, along with previously announced High Potential Season 2, Abbott Elementary Season 5, and Ryan Murphy’s new 9-1-1 spin-off 9-1-1: Nashville.

Meanwhile,the fate of Joshua Jackson’s cruise-set medical drama Doctor Odyssey is currently undetermined. However, ABC is reportedly in active conversations about its potential Season 2 renewal.

What ABC shows were renewed?

Listed below are the five ABC shows that have been renewed for one season:

  • Shifting Gears is returning for a second season. Since its debut, it has become the most-watched ABC series launched on Hulu and Hulu on Disney+, beating The Conners’ previous record in 2018. In its first seven days, the new show has garnered a total cross-platform audience of nearly 17 million viewers. The sitcom stars Allen and Dennings as Matt and Riley, a father-daughter duo who get a chance to reconnect, after the newly-divorced Riley moves back home with her kids.
  • Will Trent is coming back for a fourth season. The series is led by Ramón Rodríguez as he plays the titular role of special Agent Will Trent of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. He uses his unique point of view in the pursuit of justice and has the highest clearance rate in the GBI. The cast also includes Erika Christensen as Angie Polaski, Iantha Richardson as Faith Mitchell, Jake McLaughlin as Michael Ormewood, with Sonja Sohn as Amanda Wagner and Gina Rodriguez as Marion Alba.

  • The Rookie has been renewed for an eighth season. The show hails from creator and executive producer Alexi Hawley. It stars Nathan Fillion as John Nolan, who was once the oldest rookie in the LAPD, has used his life experience, determination and sense of humor to keep up with rookies 20 years his junior. Additional cast members include Mekia Cox as Nyla Harper, Alyssa Diaz as Angela Lopez, Richard T. Jones as Sergeant Wade Grey, Melissa O’Neil as Lucy Chen, Eric Winter as Tim Bradford, Jenna Dewan as Bailey Nune, Shawn Ashmore as Wesley Evers and Lisseth Chavez as Celina Juarez.
  • 9-1-1 will be coming back for a ninth season. The show hails from Emmy-winning creator Ryan Murphy. It centers around lives of first responders, police officers, firefighters, and paramedics. The series features Angela Bassett as Athena, Peter Krause as Bobby, Oliver Stark as Buck, Aisha Hinds as Hen, Kenneth Choi as Chimney, Gavin McHugh as Christopher, Ryan Guzman as Eddie and more.
  • Grey’s Anatomy is returning for Season 22. The long-running medical drama is created and executive produced by Shonda Rhimes (Scandal, How to Get Away with Murder), with Meg Marinis serving as its showrunner. Despite no longer appearing as a series regular, series lead Ellen Pompeo has remained as the show’s narrator and executive producer.
