Nearly half of the Democratic base is showing reluctance towards President Joe Biden’s potential re-election bid, expressing a preference for former First Lady Michelle Obama to lead the party into the 2024 Presidential race. Amid growing concerns regarding Biden’s age and mental fitness for office, a Rasmussen Reports survey released on Monday highlights that 48% of Democrats are in favor of nominating a new candidate, with Michelle Obama emerging as a favored choice among potential alternatives.

The poll indicates a divided sentiment within the Democratic Party, with 38% opposing the idea of replacing Biden. Despite the push for change, only 33% believe a change in the Democratic ticket is on the horizon, while 45% deem it unlikely, including 18% who dismiss the possibility entirely.

The preference for who could potentially fill Biden’s shoes is varied among Democratic voters, with no clear consensus. Michelle Obama, however, stands out with 20% support, surpassing other prominent figures such as Vice President Kamala Harris, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, and Governors Gavin Newsom of California and Gretchen Whitmer of Michigan. Nonetheless, a notable 27% of respondents are not in favor of any suggested alternatives, favoring Biden’s continuation.

While Harris has expressed her readiness to take on the role if needed, Michelle Obama has consistently distanced herself from presidential ambitions, despite her active participation in Democratic advocacy. The possibility of Obama stepping into the presidential race was speculated by Senator Ted Cruz, especially with the Democratic National Convention set to take place in Chicago, Obama’s hometown.

As the oldest president in U.S. history, Biden’s potential second term raises concerns about his age, with projections that he would be 86 by its conclusion. Despite trailing behind GOP frontrunner Donald Trump in key battleground states, Biden has not indicated any intention to withdraw, leaving the Democratic Party’s 2024 strategy an area of speculation and debate.
