There has been a significant decrease in traffic deaths this year, according to the Iowa State Patrol.So far, in 2024, there have been 137 traffic-related deaths — 31 less than this time last year.Sgt. Alex Dinkla told KCCI the decrease is promising. He also says several of those deaths may have been prevented, if drivers and passengers took one extra precaution. “We can’t stress enough, have patience, wear that seat belt,” he said. According to Dinkla, “So far, 47 percent of the fatalities we’ve had here in Iowa, those people did not wear that seatbelt.” He emphasized that if these individuals had worn their seatbelts, there would have been a greater chance of survival or avoiding injury altogether. The Iowa State Patrol also pointed out that the Fourth of July has been the deadliest holiday for Iowa drivers in recent years. As a result, they are urging drivers to exercise extra caution during this period.In anticipation of the holiday, the state patrol announced that there would be an increase in state troopers and other law enforcement presence on the roads.
