Construction season is upon us and next week, construction on Stange Road will begin. It is scheduled to end in August.

Angie Solberg, capital project manager for ISU Facilities Planning and Management, said the condition and age of the road required construction.

“Reconstruction was the only option at this point,” Solberg said.

According to Solberg, starting Monday, they are closing the northbound lanes on Stange Road.

“It will have head-to-head traffic in the southbound lanes for reconstruction of Stange between 13th St. and Blankenburg,” Solberg said. “Which is where the city’s construction stopped a couple of years ago.”

Solberg said there will be a period of time when only one lane is open throughout the construction process.

“Depending on the stage, whether it’s northbound or southbound, will be rerouted to Grand,” Solberg said. “So it’ll be 13th Street to Grand to 24th or 24th to Grand to 13th, depending on which direction you’re going, just for the paving operations and certain times during construction, to make sure that the workers and vehicular traffic, everybody is safe going to construction zone.”

Solberg said there will be signage directing drivers through detours and closures and for those living on these roads will be informed.

“There’ll be times during construction when the intersection at Bruner will be closed and the intersection at Blankenburg will be closed during the first phase,” Solberg said. “Then there’ll be times during the phase two, which when they’re doing the southbound lanes is phase two, when the Veenker intersection is closed. But we’re working closely with the folks and [Schilletter-University Village] and CyRide [and] at the golf course to ensure that the impacts are minimal as much as they can be.”

Solberg said for those living in SUV, there are four ways out of the Village.

“Just paying attention to traffic signs and closures will be critical during construction to be able to get your way in and out of the area, and if it’s possible, detouring to Grand to minimize traffic congestion would be recommended just to minimize delays,” Solberg said.

Solberg said substantial completion is to be done before classes start in the fall, and in the meantime, expect traffic congestion and delays and take those detours.
