Iowa State swimming and diving fell to Kansas in its final duel of the regular season 181-117 Friday. The loss is the third in a row for the Cyclones, who will close their season with a record of 3-5.

The crowd in Lawrence, Kansas, was shown in an early win from the Jayhawks in the 200-yard medley relay before Iowa State senior Mallory Miller fired back with a win in the 1,000-yard freestyle.

The Jayhawks then took home a pair of podium sweeps in the 200-yard freestyle and 100-yard backstroke.

Freshman Grace Swoboda wrapped up another Cyclone win in the 100-yard breaststroke before graduate student Winter Craig secured a close win over Kansas’ Anna Gearhart in the 200-yard fly.

Iowa State’s winning streak ground to a halt after the 200-yard fly, as Kansas won the 50-yard freestyle and 200-yard backstroke and swept the podium in the 100-yard freestyle.

It was a great day for the underclassmen, as freshman Anja Peck won the 200-yard breaststroke, followed by Swoboda for the first Cyclone 1-2 of the day.

Kansas shut down the momentum again with dominant performances in the 500-yard freestyle and 100-yard fly.

Miller notched another win in the 200-yard individual medley in another strong Cyclone showing, with senior Fallon DeWitt finishing closely behind.

The swimming portion of the event wrapped up with a Kansas win in the 400-yard freestyle relay, putting a stamp on a dominant showing from the Jayhawks.

Kansas’ Shiyun Lai put on a show in the diving events. The sophomore cruised to wins in the 3m and 1m events, setting a pool record of 336.30 in the 1m.

The diving events were rounded out with strong showings from the Cyclones, with freshman Maggie Bendell and junior Kate Mitchell finishing second and third in the 1m. Mitchell completed the pair with another third-place finish in the 3m.

The loss wraps up a regular season filled with ups and downs for the Cyclones, as they will have another chance to show their skills in the Big 12 Championships, beginning Feb. 25 in Federal Way, Washington.
