The Big 12 conference announced its yearly honors with the Phillips 66 All-Big 12 Men’s Basketball Awards on Monday.
Iowa State had four players earn honors, with some being named to multiple different teams.
The one who led the Cyclones was senior guard Curtis Jones, who was named the Sixth Man of the Year for the first time with Iowa State. Along with the Sixth Man honor, Jones was the lone Cyclone to be named to the All-Big 12 First Team as well and has become the only player in Big 12 history to earn both honors in the same year.
Jones had a big year for Iowa State. He led the team in scoring with 509 points (17 per game) on a 42.1% shooting clip from the field, while going 36.6% from 3-point range and being tied for the best free throw percentage with sophomore forward Milan Momcilovic at a 83.7% rate.
Along with his shooting abilities, Jones was very active on the boards, as he was third in rebounds with 134 (4.5 per game), only behind junior forward Joshua Jefferson and senior center Dishon Jackson.
Jones accomplished this while playing in all but one game this season on an average of 30.5 minutes per game, and even started eight of the games he played in as well.
The next player who was honored for two different awards was Jefferson, who was named to the All-Big 12 Second Team and the All-Newcomer Team.
In his first season with the Cyclones, Jefferson has exploded onto the scene after transferring from St. Mary’s, averaging 12.7 points per game on an efficient 50.9% field goal shooting percentage, 34% from deep and 78.2% from the charity stripe.
Along with the scoring, Jefferson showcased his abilities to make plays all over the floor, as he led Iowa State in rebounding (7.5 per game) and steals (2.1 per game), while averaging 2.9 assists as well.
Jefferson’s total stats, which consist of 395 points, 232 rebounds, 89 assists, 64 steals and 22 blocks, makes him the only player in Big 12 history to record these stats in a single season.
Jefferson achieved these feats while playing and starting in every game, as he and junior guard Tamin Lipsey were the only two players to play and start in every game this season.
That leads to the next player who earned honors on two different teams, and that was Lipsey.
The Ames native was named to the All-Big 12 Third Team and All-Defensive Team for the second consecutive season, which is a school record.
While Lipsey’s efforts weren’t enough to earn him back on the All-Big 12 First Team, he still played an integral part in the Cyclones’ success this season, all while dealing with a thumb injury throughout the season.
On the season, Lipsey averaged 10.6 points per game on 31.1 minutes, while shooting at a 47.7% rate from the field, 32.4% from deep and 76.1% from the free throw line.
Lipsey is also tied with Jefferson for steals with 2.1 per game, while dishing out 3.2 assists and grabbing 2.6 rebounds per game as well.
The last Iowa State player to earn Big 12 honors was senior guard Keshon Gilbert, who was also named to the All-Big 12 Third Team with Lipsey.
Despite nearly replicating his stats from last season, Gilbert’s efforts weren’t enough to get him on the All-Big 12 Second Team, which he was named to a season ago.
Still, while not playing in every game like he did last season, Gilbert was a force to be reckoned with after averaging 13.8 points per game on a team-high 32.4 minutes per game. He achieved these shooting feats on a 48.4% field goal shooting, 32.9% 3-point shooting and 72.9% free throw shooting.
Gilbert also averages a team-high 4.3 assists per game, while grabbing 3.6 rebounds and 1.8 steals, but still has trouble with the turnover margin, as he leads the team with 3.4 a game.
With both the Big 12 Tournament and NCAA Tournament looming, these Cyclones will look to continue to perform at a high level in hopes of bringing success to the program.
