Game of the week

Our game of the week is Clarinda at Van Meter in a matchup of teams with 3-1 records. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. in Van Meter.

The visiting Cardinals opened the season with wins against Creston and Shenandoah before falling to Underwood in Week 3. Last week they trailed Chariton 10-0 at halftime, but won 14-13 on second-half touchdowns by junior Cooper Baumgart, who scored on a 4-yard run, and senior Kayden Hawley, who caught a 26-yard score from Baumgart.

Senior Connor Luzmoor leads the Cardinals with 33.5 tackles, including 5.5 tackles for loss.

Van Meter has won three straight games after opening with a 34-17 loss to Des Moines Christian. They scored 21 first-quarter points on three big plays in last week’s 37-7 homecoming win against Woodward-Granger, including an 80-yard touchdown run by sophomore Keenan Lundy, a 55-yard interception return for TD by junior Sully Tinkey and a 73-yard TD run by senior Lexon Blevins.

The Bulldogs average nearly 300 yards rushing per game, led by Lundy, who has 510 total yards rushing this season and 7 touchdowns.

In last Friday’s game of the week, Ankeny beat cross-town rival Ankeny Centennial, 59-0.

Stat leaders heading into Week 5

No player has accounted for more touchdowns this season than Iowa Valley’s Nolan Kriegel.

The senior quarterback and defensive back has 21 rushing touchdowns through five games, as well as 8 passing TDs, two receiving and one kick return score.

Unbeaten list after Week 4

Heading into Week 5, nearly 50 teams remain unbeaten across all of Iowa’s 7 classes. That includes Southeast Polk, which beat previously unbeaten Dowling last week, and Ankeny and Sioux City East, which play each other Friday night.

Homecoming season

This Friday is the season’s biggest for homecoming football games. We have more than 75 homecoming games on the schedule.
