A well-known family-owned jewelry store in Marshalltown is now out thousands of dollars. Marshalltown police are now looking for two suspects accused of smashing their way into the store and stealing a lot of jewelry.Investigators say Douglas Baker and Dewayne Rowley, both of Des Moines, broke into the Hellberg’s Jewelers just after 4 a.m. on April 4. The two men were in and out in minutes, something police and the Hellberg family know for a fact because the entire thing was caught on camera. “They were running in the hallways and running around in here as fast as they could do this to try to get as much as they could,” said Victor Hellberg, who owns Hellberg’s Jewelers with his wife, Gayle. The two men left five glass cases filled with jewelry, shattered and empty. Hellberg tells KCCI that while they don’t have a set number yet because they’re still working on figuring it out, the pair stole thousands of dollars’ worth of jewelry from the shop that has been in Hellberg’s family for 127 years. “My father owned it before and my grandfather and my great-grandfather,” Hellberg said. “It’s real disheartening to have this happen to you, and have what you worked for and what you’re going to pass on to the next generation has been affected.” Police say there are active warrants for Baker and Rowley’s arrests. When the two broke in, they were in and out quickly. “They were in here for about three and a half minutes,” said Hellberg, who tells KCCI he believes he saw the two men in the store once before. In the short time when they broke into the store, Hellberg says they took off with diamond engagement rings, wedding rings, bracelets, pendants, and earrings from five displays. “Many pieces were probably over a thousand each,” said Hellberg. The Hellbergs are still working on an estimate, while also continuing to pick up the pieces as they remain open. “We’ve replaced the back door where they broke in,” Hellberg said. “We’ve replaced the glass in our sliding door that opens to our store.” Hellberg also says the glass for the new barren displays should be coming soon, which means they can start replacing the jewelry. In the meantime, police are working to bring in Baker and Rowley and hopefully find the stolen pieces. “I feel very confident of how they’re handling this. They’re doing a wonderful job,” Hellberg said. Anyone with information on Baker and Rowley’s whereabouts is urged to contact police.
