Des Moines Public Schools has filed a lawsuit against the firm hired to facilitate the superintendent search that resulted in the hiring of Ian Roberts. In a statement following two closed sessions during Friday morning’s special meeting, DMPS Board Chair Jackie Norris said One-Fourth Consulting LLC, doing business as JG Consulting, failed to “properly vet candidates.””Dr. Roberts should have never been presented as a potential Superintendent,” Norris said. “JG Consulting’s contract required them to bring all known information of a positive or negative nature to the Board, and since that did not happen the Board will pursue aggressive legal action in accordance with the law.”The district claims breach of contract and negligence in the lawsuit, filed Friday morning in Polk County.”With regard to breach of contract, the District asserts that JG Consulting failed to properly vet Roberts as a candidate and referred Roberts for consideration even though he could not lawfully hold the position. The negligence claim stems from the fact that the firm represented Roberts as a suitable and viable candidate when he was not, and failed to exercise reasonable care in gathering, verifying and supplying information on Roberts.”The district has requested a jury trial and is seeking damages “in an amount to be determined at trial.””This lawsuit won’t undo the hurt felt by those who have been impacted by our former superintendent,” said Norris. “The Board’s goal is to provide the facts necessary to firmly close this chapter and begin the process of healing and improving.
