The upcoming live-action Street Fighter movie has been making waves the past month, as its reported cast features a litany of stars across different forms of entertainment.
Street Fighter’s casting is the wildest we’ve seen in years
The movie features a star-studded group. This includes Andrew Koji as Ryu, Callina Liang as Chun-Li, Noah Centineo as Ken, Jason Momoa as Blanka, Roman Reigns as Akuma, Orville Peck as Vega, Andrew Schulz as Dan Hibiki, Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson as Balrog, and David Dastmalchian as M. Bison.
Outside of its confirmed cast, Cody Rhodes is rumored to be involved in the film as Guile, and other stars like Eric Andre are rumored to be appearing in the film in some capacity. Despite the eccentric cast being questioned across social media, the Street Fighter movie has a chance to pay off in a big way.
Why taking a risk with an eccentric cast of actors might pay off
For a project like Street Fighter, which already is a game all about chaotic and outlandish fighting, going the route of a more wild cast of actors could be beneficial. Pulling from all walks of entertainment not only gets more people interested, but can result in some hilarious moments on the screen.
Specifically, casting multiple WWE superstars (assuming the Cody Rhodes report is accurate) could result in an entirely new audience group checking out the movie. The WWE castings also match well with Street Fighter’s overall tone as a game. The series is no stranger to bombastic characters, and bringing in larger-than-life personas like Roman Reigns and Rhodes to portray over-the-top characters could result in a more accurate performance than a normal actor doing it.
Elsewhere, bringing in non-traditional actors like Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson and Andrew Schulz show the makers of the Street Fighter movie aren’t afraid to branch out and capture the essence of the game’s characters. Schulz’s casting was met with confusion at first, but him playing the generally cowardly and awkward Dan Hibiki, for instance, will likely result in some hilarious moments on screen.
With even more casting information to come, it seems like the Street Fighter movie is hellbent on bringing together one of the more unique and varied casts we’ve seen in some time. Whether or not it works out is yet to be seen, but they’re likely to continue betting it all in return for a potential big payday.
