The Cyclones men’s golf team traveled to Cincinnati to participate in the Bearcat Invitational. The competition opened Monday and concluded Tuesday. Iowa State entered fresh off a win in its season opener at the Gopher Invitational.
The men’s golf squad also boasted the Cyclone Club Athlete of the Week in senior golfer Luke Gutschewski, a strong accomplishment to pair with the team’s week one win.
At-par in round one
Iowa State opened its run at the Bearcat Invitational with an at-par round one. This performance resulted in a three-way tie for fourth place.
The Cyclones tied with their Big 12 rivals, Kansas, and the host school, Cincinnati, for fourth place at the end of the first round. They also slotted themselves right behind another Big 12 team, the BYU Cougars.
Unsurprisingly, the team was led by junior Paul Beauvy, also in a five-way tie for fourth place among individuals. Gutschewski followed closely behind in ninth place.
Iowa State falls to fifth place at the end of day one
After a tie-heavy first round, the field slowly began to create some distance in the second round. The Cyclones fell to fifth place at the culmination of the second round, while the Jayhawks rose to second place with the Bearcats right behind them in third place.
Iowa State’s second-round performance was five over par, with a cumulative score of 573; a singular point away behind the fourth-place Little Rock Trojans.
In terms of individual performance, Beauvy fell into a three-way tie for sixth place while Gutschewski was stuck in ninth, also caught up in a three-way tie.
Cyclones stick in fifth to end round three
Iowa State maintained its steady play on the first day, resulting in the team sticking in fifth place by the end of the Bearcat Invitational. This slotted them in a tie with Furman University at a score of 860.
The Cyclones’ round three score of 287 was their second-best single round performance of the event, with a consistent performance of scores between 284 and 289. The team finished at eight-over par.
As individual golfers, Beauvy placed in a tie for sixth place, while sophomore Owen Sawyer leapt up the leaderboards and finished in a tie for 10th place. Gutschewski slid down to a tie for 24th place.
